i'm jake tapper. just moments ago, the white house having to defend the president over old and new accusations of sexism. today, 59 democratic women members of the house of representatives called for an investigation into the multiple allegations of sexual misconduct made against president trump dating back to the 1980s. this in addition to the fact that six senators who caucus with the democrats have suggested the president should resign because of these allegations, including new york senator kirsten gillibrand, the only one president trump singled out for an attack. tweeting this morning, quote, lightweight senator kirsten gillibrand, a total flunky for chuck schumer and someone who would come to my office, quote, begging for campaign contributions not so long ago and would do anything for them is now in the ring fighting against trump. very disloyal to bill and crooked. used. the president suggesting gillibrand would do, quote, anything for campaign contributions has been interpreted by democrats

i'm jake tapper. we have breaking news this afternoon. white house counsel don mcgahn told president trump back in january cnn has learned that he believed then national security adviser michael flynn had misled the fbi during their january 24th interview with flynn and lied to vice president mike pence. a source familiar with the matter told cnn today. this means that the president knew flynn had potentially committed a felony when, according to then fbi director james comey, on february 14th after the president had fired flynn he said to comey, quote, i hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting flynn go, he is a good guy. i hope you can let this go. now, if the president was aware that flynn had likely committed a federal crime when he made that alleged request, which the president disputes, that raises serious questions of potential obstruction of justice. though this morning the president's lawyer john dowd claimed such a thing was by definition impossible. in a new interview with axios, quote, the president canno

i'm jake tapper. we're going to begin with the breaking news. after passing the house of representatives by a vote of 227-203, the republican tax bill now heads to the u.s. senate and could be on president trump's resolute desk by tomorrow. the first major legislative success for the republican party this year. the legislation proposes sweeping changes to the nation's tax code, significant cuts to the corporate tax rate, and if it passes the senate as well, according to one analysis, this will be the most deeply unpopular piece of legislation to do so in 30 years. house republicans this afternoon celebrated the hard-fought victory. two big questions loom, of course, will this bill indeed spur economic growth? and second, will, as house speaker paul ryan predicted, will voters change their minds about this legislation once it begins to take effect? a new cnn poll finds that 55% of the american people oppose the tax overhaul with only 33% supporting it. and 66% of those polled say the bill will benefit the wealthy more than it will the middle clas

i'm jake tapper. we begin today with our politics lead. and an attempt by the democratic party to clean house and senate. ridding the party of those accused by multiple women of inappropriate if not illegal behavior. clearly a move to try to seize back the high ground so as to more credibly criticize roy moore, the alabama senate candidate who has been accused of molesting a 14-year-old girl and sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl. not to mention criticizing president trump, who has at least a dozen accusers who have publicly said he touched them inappropriately or harassed them. one of them suing the president for defamation of character after he called all of his accusers liars. that context is key to understanding why at this hour at least 30 members of the democratic senate caucus, including 13 women senators, have called for democratic senator al franken of minnesota to step down following seven women in the last three weeks allege that franken touched them or tried to kiss them inappropriately. all of these 30 calls coming today,
