and then allen went off on a bike ride. but allen never came home. he was 40 years old and a dad with three kids. but when he was on his bike ride something happened. he collapsed. he was rushed to the hospital and he didn't make it through the night. allen passed away that night. and his wife and kids miss him every single day. now, somehow lisa's found the strength to pick up the pieces. she keeps going. she's running the company now. she's running the company honoring allen's work and taking the company to new heights and deepening the commitment to rhode island. so recently i asked lisa. i said why are you so committed to rhode island? i mean, she wasn't born here. she didn't grow up here. much of her family is still in new jersey. you know what she told me? she said it's the community. she said i have never lived any place with a community as strong as rhode island, with a community as tight knit, as generous, as big hearted as rhode island. allen's been gone for about nine months. lisa can't remember a single night that a friend or a neighbor,

so what was it like working with allen? what did you learn? >> so i did work with allen. i guess i went in 94 and then left and moved to the council of economic advisers at the beginning of clinton's second term in 1997 and i didn't really know allen before i went. i was really impressed with his intellectual strength. with his originality. no one knew the data and understood the data and could make better use of it to provide insights on the economy than allen could and i thought he was a very original thinker. and i enjoyed with him and found him very open about debate. i didn't agree with him about everything but i did agree with him about a lot of things. hi the opportunity to debate with him the question of whether or not the fed should adopt an inflation target. and what it should be. i thought we should adopt a target and i thought it should be 2% and i thought i articulated the reasons about the zero lower bound and nominal wage that later became central to our decisions. ellen's view was that we should not adopt an inflation target at all and he was successful of

[applause] >> good evening. thank you all for being here. i'm going to put my glasses on. i've only wear them when i want to speak. it is my great pleasure to introduce our speaker for this evening professor allen guelzo. professor guelzo is a teacher, he's a professor and he is one of the leading historians and a variety of early american history religion and culture. but he is perhaps best known as one of the most prolific and important historians of the american civil war and of course abraham lincoln. he has received numerous prestigious awards including the lincoln pride, the abraham lincoln institute book prize and the authors regularly a number of articles that are published in leading newspapers, "usa today," "the wall street journa

allen. and ms. garcia and pam as well for your work on this presentation and our director and everyone who's been trying to help us navigate this new era here in san francisco. i appreciate the overview of the work that you have done in the past as well as highlight or preview of what you plan to do in the future as well. i really do like that you have a portion on here regarding youth. that is really important. and a lot of youth in our district through the youth council that we have in district four are curious about this topic. ftz in, it might be one that they're adopting to work on this year. because they also want to understand better how it is that they talk to their peers about it. how do they understand, you know, kind of what's available to them or not and so forth. and i see -- ok. you are not getting up to talk about it. i would like to see what that education plan is for youth and now the unified school district as a whole is going to institutionalize this type of outreach to our youth.

i'm paul allen, this is bloomberg. david: thank you. china at any point will be releasing its latest trade figures with the jalan's -- january balance import. when you haveime escalating trade tensions between beijing and washington. tom mackenzie is with us in hong kong. looking at the forecast, i'm still seeing solid numbers. the preliminary data we saw in terms of the pmi's and certainly from south korea, where you saw a tick up of 9.2% in the first 20 days of the month, seems to suggest the internal demand is there. in terms of exports, surveys suggest we see 10 .7% year on year, a little below what we saw in december, 10.9. double look to at least if the estimates are on point, about 10.6% increase year on year versus 4.5% last year. expected torplus is pick up pretty strongly at 54 billion u.s. dollars. that feeds into the fx reserves, 12 straight months of a pickup in fx reserves, the strength of yuan is a question. that may posedrug on exports going forward. there don't seem to be many economists out there who are too concerned
