populated area for the naval air station to be right in the middle of virginia beach here, the big boardwalk. everybody knows about virginia beach, and then the rest of the area called hampton roads, but you have fore folk, and chesapeake and much more populated than when the naval air station oceana was installed. let's fly you through what happened today. we'll get you right to where virginia beach is. we'll start this all over again so you can get an idea for where the crash happened to the beach, one mile. from the end of the runway to the crash, two and a half miles. so not a lot of time at 200 and something miles per hour, this plane's going about 200 knots as it left here, run way 5r, taking off toward the beach and leaving the naval air station. at some point, something catastrophic happened here where the pilot at some point knew that this plane wasn't going fly. if you follow a straight line it will take you right here, to this side of the map, way over here, but at the very last moment we know the plane began to tilt to the right, kind of just using it to the right and that plane

goes by the boardwalk. we'll walk down there in a little bit. it's a serious situation here. but again, i think it's more the length with which this storm will stay over this area and the amount of the lengthy sustained winds blowing for bringing a lot of that surge, a lot of that flooding in. i think we've just begun to see it here, wolf. >> anderson's going to have more coming up on his show 8:00 p.m. eastern. anderson, thanks very much. kate baldwin is here helping us cover the disaster, as well, kate. >> amazing the size of this thing. let's stay in nnew jersey for a moment. ali, you have been blown around quite a bit. what are you seeing now? i understand the city wide curfew just set in. yes? >> reporter: curfew is under way right now. you are not to be on the streets of atlantic city. it is against the law now. there's a complete travel ban. if you are not an emergency crew, not covering this, you see this emergency vehicle coming up next to me. that's all we are seeing. national guard just drove by.

what are you seeing there on the boardwalk today? >> reporter: well, right behind me, directly behind me, that scrap wood you see there, that was parts of the boardwalk. this is the northern part of atlantic city, again, the atlantic ocean just pounded away right behind me. the ocean is just over some of that scrap wood, maybe 100 yards. and you actually had had people -- if you can see these buildings -- if we can take a look at these buildings once again. there's two buildings. i had a chance to talk to the person, it's a husband and wife and daughter living in the center building there. and they tried to ride out this storm. this gentleman was telling me the story, and i saw the damage firsthand, the yellow tape there now, it's too dangerous, there is a strong scent of gasoline coming out of the buildings. but the man said at 7:30 in the morning yesterday as the storm began to wallop this area, the atlantic ocean was knock ong his front door and blew open his front door by 8:30 in the morning. so here is this guy trying to pound u

today some of the video i sent you you see a boardwalk three blocks in, sand up to people's midway through their front door three blocks in. legendary surf club you talked about, it's just gone. they need to get people -- they need to get the gas off before fire starts. wolf, there's no electricity to pump water for the fire trucks to put anything out if a fire starts. they need to get the gas off and they need to go door to door over there. i just heard the -- saying that the search and rescue is over. >> if you could speak to the governor or the president of the united states right now, what would you say? >> they need to get people door to door in the bungalow. i'm not talking about the ocean front wealthy people like me. we have plenty of insurance. those houses are gone. the bungalows where elderly people were living, they need to get the gas off and get to these people. they have no phones to call anybody. >> john, i think people were watching, were listening to what you were saying. our heart goes out to you and everybody who's seeing what's going on. and hopefully they'll get into

perhaps it's most prominent feature was always a boardwalk that ran along there. it was completely removed by the forces of sandy that took away all of the sand and ripped the boardwalk up. you can see now what's left of it is being cleared away as they try to rebuild. and rebuild is exactly what they have in mind today. we talked a little bit earlier with mayor matt dougherty, and this is what he had to say about the determination to get the job done. >> we want to be very aggressive in this cleanup operation after hurricane sandy. we have numerous pumps going at the same time, getting the water out of our community and back up to the atlantic. president obama and governor chris christie have been outstanding in their statements and even governor christie coming here to meet with me saying just get it done, do what you need to do to get it cleaned up. >> reporter: case and point, some of the pumps operating down here to drain out the city, it's literally a bowl. the sea water got in, it has no way of getting out. they're going to have to pump it out. so they're d

. >> wolf, this is all that's left of a popular boardwalk here. some describe it as looking like a war zone. many here and near by are still in the dark. pamela shapiro has been cleaning up since water gushed into her home, and now she just craves to be able to turn on the lights. >> i feel let down, we did everything that we were asked to do, and still that we don't have power is mind boggling. >> the basement ruined had just been redone after damage from hurricane irene last year. and a promise restored power was mixed because of a snaf few with her electricians evaluation. >> i said i wish i was young again and my parents were here to take care of me. just to make it better for half an hour. that's it, i just didn't want to be an adult for half an hour. >> she considers herself lucky. not far from her, there are families that can't live in their homes. the house that this family bought three years ago is now destroyed, and now he is waiting for help to rebuild. >> it's frustrating and i'm getting angrier every day. you know? that's how i feel.
