beach here, the big boardwalk. everybody knows about virginia beach, and then the rest of the area called hampton roads, but you have fore folk, and chesapeake and much more populated than when the naval air station oceana was installed. let's fly you through what happened today. we'll get you right to where virginia beach is. we'll start this all over again so you can get an idea for where the crash happened to the beach, one mile. from the end of the runway to the crash, two and a half miles. so not a lot of time at 200 and something miles per hour, this plane's going about 200 knots as it left here, run way 5r, taking off toward the beach and leaving the naval air station. at some point, something catastrophic happened here where the pilot at some point knew that this plane wasn't going fly. if you follow a straight line it will take you right here, to this side of the map, way over here, but at the very last moment we know the plane began to tilt to the right, kind of just using it to the right and that plane did not go in a straight scomplien it curved off to the right and it

storm right here on the boardwalk at rehobeth beach. they are worried about this boardwalk. what they're dealing with as well is inland flooding from the bays and tributaries and rivers not too far inland from here. lots of roads under water as those surges come up and some of those areas get flooded. there are a lot of roads under water right now, trees down on some other roads, traveling around now, really not advised at all. one big concern here, beach erosion. you see the tide behind me. this is not high tide. the high tide is going to come back soon. it was here earlier. i'm going to step onto the beach area. high tide earlier here was pretty hellacious. beach erosion here, they built out this beach earlier this year. they finished it in may. the army corps of engineers built the beach out to 300 feet out there. they are worried they are going to lose all of that with the storm surge here, that it could compromise some of the hotels, some of the residences and businesses all along this boardwalk area. that's what they're really worried about right now. you can see the storm

. >>> sandy managed to morph much of atlantic city into the atlantic ocean, ripping parts of its boardwalk to pieces. these are aerial pictures of the devastation that spans for mile miles. joining us on the phone is the mayor of atlantic city. we spoke yesterday. i want to get an update. what's the latest as far as the devastation in atlantic city? >> caller: good evening. actually the property damage here in atlantic city is pretty extensive but i'm happy to report that the human damage, if you will, has been minimal. so i think our glass is half full here in atlantic city. as much as we would like to report that we fared better, i can't say that. i'm actually what is referred to as ground zero. other than power lines down and trees being uprooted, i think we did pretty good. >> is everyone safe? are search and rescue operations still underway? >> for the most part, everybody has been -- everyone who has attempted to get to a safer place or shelter. i'm happy to report that on the human side, all is well. >> you got into a public dispute with the governor yesterday. he was irritated with wh

boardwalk three blocks in, sand up to people's midway through their front door three blocks in. legendary surf club you talked about, it's just gone. they need to get people -- they need to get the gas off before fire starts. wolf, there's no electricity to pump water for the fire trucks to put anything out if a fire starts. they need to get the gas off and they need to go door to door over there. i just heard the -- saying that the search and rescue is over. >> if you could speak to the governor or the president of the united states right now, what would you say? >> they need to get people door to door in the bungalow. i'm not talking about the ocean front wealthy people like me. we have plenty of insurance. those houses are gone. the bungalows where elderly people were living, they need to get the gas off and get to these people. they have no phones to call anybody. >> john, i think people were watching, were listening to what you were saying. our heart goes out to you and everybody who's seeing what's going on. and hopefully they'll get into action. i'm really worried about
