boardwalk. 1.2 miles of it ripped out by the storm. they are working feverishly right now. they're preparing for that nor'easter that is reportedly on its way. now it's not going to be as bad as any superstorm, but you have to understand that this city's water table is now so high the mayor told me just a short time ago that if they get even an inch of water from that storm, it could flood the basements of this town all over again. what are they doing? they're pumping. they're pumping tens upon tens of thousands of gallons. the mayor says 60,000 gallons a minute are being pumped out of these two lakes as they try to lower the water there and protect this town from many of the effects of that upcoming storm. on another front voting. there's been a lot of talk about the electronic ballot,, the possibility of voters turning in their ballots by e-mail or by fax, but in a town that doesn't have any electricity, that's want really a very viable option. yes, it may work for some of the residents who have taken shelter outside of the town in areas that do have power, but for the residents

day after sandy struck. look at the expanse of all of this. it shows the beach boardwalk in his hometown del mar destroyed along with many of the shops that run up and down that area. it is really just a small, small snap shot of a much wider path of destruction that is along the coast that we are watching and seeing. destruction that governor chris christy has now called overwhelming. brian morowski is joining us on the phone from new jersey, and, brian, i understand that you actually road your bike to the boardwalk after the storm just to see what kind of damage was there. can you describe for me what you saw? >> yeah. it was like a war zone. it was unbelievable. i mean, just buildings crushed. the board walk completely gone. very sad. people's belongings everywhere. not fun, man. not fun to see. >> brian,s somebody who is a part of this community, i can't imagine really what the emotions are that you are experiencing. can you talk a little bit about your conversations that you have with your family and your friends, some of the emotions that go through when you look at the da

. >>> sandy managed to morph much of atlantic city into the atlantic ocean, ripping parts of its boardwalk to pieces. these are aerial pictures of the devastation that spans for mile miles. joining us on the phone is the mayor of atlantic city. we spoke yesterday. i want to get an update. what's the latest as far as the devastation in atlantic city? >> caller: good evening. actually the property damage here in atlantic city is pretty extensive but i'm happy to report that the human damage, if you will, has been minimal. so i think our glass is half full here in atlantic city. as much as we would like to report that we fared better, i can't say that. i'm actually what is referred to as ground zero. other than power lines down and trees being uprooted, i think we did pretty good. >> is everyone safe? are search and rescue operations still underway? >> for the most part, everybody has been -- everyone who has attempted to get to a safer place or shelter. i'm happy to report that on the human side, all is well. >> you got into a public dispute with the governor yesterday. he was irritated with wh

storm right here on the boardwalk at rehobeth beach. they are worried about this boardwalk. what they're dealing with as well is inland flooding from the bays and tributaries and rivers not too far inland from here. lots of roads under water as those surges come up and some of those areas get flooded. there are a lot of roads under water right now, trees down on some other roads, traveling around now, really not advised at all. one big concern here, beach erosion. you see the tide behind me. this is not high tide. the high tide is going to come back soon. it was here earlier. i'm going to step onto the beach area. high tide earlier here was pretty hellacious. beach erosion here, they built out this beach earlier this year. they finished it in may. the army corps of engineers built the beach out to 300 feet out there. they are worried they are going to lose all of that with the storm surge here, that it could compromise some of the hotels, some of the residences and businesses all along this boardwalk area. that's what they're really worried about right now. you can see the storm

from the boardwalk. >> yeah, we moved in the last hour. now before we were on the other side of the park. we now moved to an overlook here on the backside of the park. you can give you a better sense of what's going on. you can see, that is the river running along the backside of the park. you can see it running right there against the retaining wall on the backside of the beach boardwalk and that is what is causing the problems out here. usually that river runs directly out to the ocean but now, since we've had all the rain over the last couple of days, it actually pushed the river out of it's regular channel a little bit to the west and is running along the backside of the park. it has already washed away one wooden stairway. i spoke with a maintenance worker when he first arrived here and he told me you can see the staircase out in the baby daylight. if that water continues to run along the retaining wall it could undermine that wall and cause a lot of damage. now the boardwalk spokesperson said that the water has never come this close to the park. coming out to our live picture,
