what are you seeing there on the boardwalk today? >> reporter: well, right behind me, directly behind me, that scrap wood you see there, that was parts of the boardwalk. this is the northern part of atlantic city, again, the atlantic ocean just pounded away right behind me. the ocean is just over some of that scrap wood, maybe 100 yards. and you actually had had people -- if you can see these buildings -- if we can take a look at these buildings once again. there's two buildings. i had a chance to talk to the person, it's a husband and wife and daughter living in the center building there. and they tried to ride out this storm. this gentleman was telling me the story, and i saw the damage firsthand, the yellow tape there now, it's too dangerous, there is a strong scent of gasoline coming out of the buildings. but the man said at 7:30 in the morning yesterday as the storm began to wallop this area, the atlantic ocean was knock ong his front door and blew open his front door by 8:30 in the morning. so here is this guy trying to pound u

perhaps it's most prominent feature was always a boardwalk that ran along there. it was completely removed by the forces of sandy that took away all of the sand and ripped the boardwalk up. you can see now what's left of it is being cleared away as they try to rebuild. and rebuild is exactly what they have in mind today. we talked a little bit earlier with mayor matt dougherty, and this is what he had to say about the determination to get the job done. >> we want to be very aggressive in this cleanup operation after hurricane sandy. we have numerous pumps going at the same time, getting the water out of our community and back up to the atlantic. president obama and governor chris christie have been outstanding in their statements and even governor christie coming here to meet with me saying just get it done, do what you need to do to get it cleaned up. >> reporter: case and point, some of the pumps operating down here to drain out the city, it's literally a bowl. the sea water got in, it has no way of getting out. they're going to have to pump it out. so they're d

we were walking up and down the boardwalk, it's breezy. we ran into somebody from the delaware transportation department and he said if people don't evacuate by 8:00 lie the governor of delaware ordered, they might be stuck if they change their mind. we talked to others on the boardwalk. >> they may not be able to leave. this county is very low. so we have flooded roads, stoplights out. they may not be able to leave. i recommend everyone leave. >> obviously we're worried being in a mobile home. we're three miles out of town and we're worried about the wind damage with mature trees and things like that. we're just going to hope for the best and come back and see what we see next weekend. >> i've been up here when i've had to hang on to the lamp poles to look at the ocean so this ising in yet. >> so the shelters open in delaware in three hours at noon. by 8:00, 11 hours from now, the governor wants everybody out. not everybody out of the state of delaware, out of areas like this. >> anything along the water. that's happening in connecticut,

the entire boardwalk. 1.2 miles of it ripped out by the storm. they are working feverishly right now. they're preparing for that nor'easter that is reportedly on its way. now it's not going to be as bad as any superstorm, but you have to understand that this city's water table is now so high the mayor told me just a short time ago that if they get even an inch of water from that storm, it could flood the basements of this town all over again. what are they doing? they're pumping. they're pumping tens upon tens of thousands of gallons. the mayor says 60,000 gallons a minute are being pumped out of these two lakes as they try to lower the water there and protect this town from many of the effects of that upcoming storm. on another front voting. there's been a lot of talk about the electronic ballot,, the possibility of voters turning in their ballots by e-mail or by fax, but in a town that doesn't have any electricity, that's want really a very viable option. yes, it may work for some of the residents who have taken shelter outside of the town in a

christian joins us live from the boardwalk. >> yeah, we moved in the last hour. now before we were on the other side of the park. we now moved to an overlook here on the backside of the park. you can give you a better sense of what's going on. you can see, that is the river running along the backside of the park. you can see it running right there against the retaining wall on the backside of the beach boardwalk and that is what is causing the problems out here. usually that river runs directly out to the ocean but now, since we've had all the rain over the last couple of days, it actually pushed the river out of it's regular channel a little bit to the west and is running along the backside of the park. it has already washed away one wooden stairway. i spoke with a maintenance worker when he first arrived here and he told me you can see the staircase out in the baby daylight. if that water continues to run along the retaining wall it could undermine that wall and cause a lot of damage. now the boardwalk spokesperson said that the water has never come this close

the boardwalk gone. just up the coast from there is the community of bellmawr. here is randy k. >> if ever this new jersey neighborhood needed an angel, they found one. they call him saint michael here. his real name is michael irwin he has been boating people to and from their homes working 12 hour shifts. there are a couple of people trying to get out. ron and pat got out and their dog. chuck we got out and there are a couple of other people we got out to other families. to make sure they got to dry land. >> michael is a surfer and a kayaker so he had a wetsuit and was a boy scout so he says he is always prepared. this is known as the 8th avenue neighborhood. the water is an avenue and is about four feet deep. luckily most of the residents not all of them did evacuate before hurricane sandy hit. eye vene evacuated to her son's house but now that she has returned she needs michael's help to return home. >> we are pretty high up. almost to the properch. we are down the corner here. the house with the red trim and it is right up. the cellar is gone. the hot water

the river is rushing along the edge of the boardwalk and crews have piled up rocks and sand to keep it out. their reports that the flooding has already done thousands of dollars of damage to the park and more rain is on its way. >>> it seems like it will never ends. >>> the possibility of more flooding continues but it looks like today we'll see more showering around the bay area but not as heavy as it has been. still will keep going. showing you the moisture right now pushing its way into the santa cruz mountains more widely scattered chisel showing up into parts of the north bay. but we will see the showers on and off throughout the day as this next band of moisture moves in of the pacific. so expect more rainfall today and will be pretty impressive totals as we wind things up by the end of the week. >>> we have had almost 11 in. of rain. almost 2 in. in san francisco but almost a hundredth of an inch in san jose. all that rain falling out over the santa cruz mountains and by the time you get to san jose a dries out. >>> man in the 50s and 60s today and for the next few days we have
