populated area for the naval air station to be right in the middle of virginia beach here, the big boardwalk. everybody knows about virginia beach, and then the rest of the area called hampton roads, but you have fore folk, and chesapeake and much more populated than when the naval air station oceana was installed. let's fly you through what happened today. we'll get you right to where virginia beach is. we'll start this all over again so you can get an idea for where the crash happened to the beach, one mile. from the end of the runway to the crash, two and a half miles. so not a lot of time at 200 and something miles per hour, this plane's going about 200 knots as it left here, run way 5r, taking off toward the beach and leaving the naval air station. at some point, something catastrophic happened here where the pilot at some point knew that this plane wasn't going fly. if you follow a straight line it will take you right here, to this side of the map, way over here, but at the very last moment we know the plane began to tilt to the right, kind of just using it to the right and that plane

perhaps it's most prominent feature was always a boardwalk that ran along there. it was completely removed by the forces of sandy that took away all of the sand and ripped the boardwalk up. you can see now what's left of it is being cleared away as they try to rebuild. and rebuild is exactly what they have in mind today. we talked a little bit earlier with mayor matt dougherty, and this is what he had to say about the determination to get the job done. >> we want to be very aggressive in this cleanup operation after hurricane sandy. we have numerous pumps going at the same time, getting the water out of our community and back up to the atlantic. president obama and governor chris christie have been outstanding in their statements and even governor christie coming here to meet with me saying just get it done, do what you need to do to get it cleaned up. >> reporter: case and point, some of the pumps operating down here to drain out the city, it's literally a bowl. the sea water got in, it has no way of getting out. they're going to have to pump it out. so they're d

now this all began about 8:45 this morning at far rockaway beach in queens on the boardwalk there. we have some video playing where you'll see that the police were interacted with some people from the public there for a little while. eventually ending in an arrest. that arrest resulted in claims by bystanders. in that video there was a choke hold. now choke holds are now banned under recently passed police reform here's in new york city. and instantly, a very swiftly, according to authorities, this case moved the internal affairs division of the new york police department and led to the officer involved being suspended without pay while that investigation goes on. so another story about a police interaction caught on video now leading to a swift action by the police department to have this officer suspended during the investigation. >> we'll state on top of the story. thank you. >>> other important news we're following here in "the situation room." major league baseball closed training camps in florida and arizona over the coronavirus fears. the players union was supposed to vote t

what are you seeing there on the boardwalk today? >> reporter: well, right behind me, directly behind me, that scrap wood you see there, that was parts of the boardwalk. this is the northern part of atlantic city, again, the atlantic ocean just pounded away right behind me. the ocean is just over some of that scrap wood, maybe 100 yards. and you actually had had people -- if you can see these buildings -- if we can take a look at these buildings once again. there's two buildings. i had a chance to talk to the person, it's a husband and wife and daughter living in the center building there. and they tried to ride out this storm. this gentleman was telling me the story, and i saw the damage firsthand, the yellow tape there now, it's too dangerous, there is a strong scent of gasoline coming out of the buildings. but the man said at 7:30 in the morning yesterday as the storm began to wallop this area, the atlantic ocean was knock ong his front door and blew open his front door by 8:30 in the morning. so here is this guy trying to pound u

i'm along the boardwalk. you mentioned transportation. state officials shutting it down light rail and bus and train service shutting down in a short time. in these areas, coastal areas, near where i am check out the tide. tide is not high. at 12:55 we're told that's when high tide is coming in. that's when the danger of flooding may occur. that's also going to be the time of the evening when we're going to be getting slammed here with the snow. the weather folks me this place could get 18 even 24 inches of snow. it's about to hit in the next couple of hours. the wind you can see the way it's hitting. right into my face. that's what's causing the whiteout conditions later tonight. that's what officials here in new jersey are worried about, whiteout conditions. if you don't have to go out tonight, do not go out. it's simply too dangerous. state police were telling me earlier, they get frustrated when people are leaving vehicles either on the road or just to the side. they say you have to try to get completely off the road completely off th

elsewhere around the country today, tourists and locals hi t hitting the boardwalk in ocean city, maryland. and in texas bars and restaurants were allowed to open friday night. a lot of people, very few, if anyone, wearing masks -- not wearing masks, i should say. the part making health officials very concerned is whether all of this reopening is too much too soon. two states today have very discouraging developments in the case of coronavirus. the governor of arkansas, asa hutchinson, announcing what he calls a second peak of infections. more new cases were confirmed today in arkansas than in the previous high and that was one month ago. and in north carolina, health officials reporting the single highest one-day total of new cases yet. more than 1,100 people confirmed with coronavirus in north carolina just today. and then there's tomorrow, sunday, and serious worries that an unsafe number of people will crowd into churches and other houses of worship. that's after president trump declared churches essential and warned state governors very sharply to make sure churches are open sunday. w

but on the boardwalk, most of the people, i would say 80%, were wearing masks as we require on the boardwalk. and as i traveled around rehoboth avenue and rehoboth beach, i saw businesses with plexiglas shields, markings on the ground and the boardwalk to designate six feet separation among people in line. i was really impressed. contrasted with what you're seeing on your program with other states, i'm just so proud of delawarians with what they're doing this memorial day weekend. we need to express our honor and our gratitude for those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country on this somost solemn of holidays. success s >> what about the 20% of people who weren't wearing masks on the boardwalk in delaware? do they pay a price for that, are they admonished, do they get a citation? >> we've been working with rehoboth and other coastal signs creating signs to advise people of their responsibilities. and they were very evident on the boardwalk and the approaches to the beaches in rehoboth. and the beach ambassadors, beach patrol, i talked to the captain on beach patrol and

he alleged live droly drove on venice beach boardwalk trying to hit as many people as possible. first of all, casey, what do we know about the driver? >> reporter: the suspect that the l.a.p.d. has in custody, a 38-year-old man by the name of nathan campbell, we have confirmed in 1995, 1996 when he was around 20, 21 years old, he spent time in a homeless youth shelter in hollywood. clearly this is a person that has been having some sort of problems for a long time. just in the last little while, two media outlets, los angeles times and the associated press, reporting he served some brief jail time and was arrested in colorado in 2009 for shoplifting and trespassing. right now the district attorney's office in los angeles saying they have not decided what charges, if any, he is going to face. that decision will be faced sometimes tomorrow. you can see there is a memorial here that has been built and there will be a vigil for the one victim who died in this tragedy, the italian woman who happened toing in venice here on her honeymoon. she and her husband was planning a honeymoon a
