in the studio, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa." jack: she's running royalty -- and she's in des moines today to cheer on the runners. kathrine switzer was the first woman to compete in a marathon in boston, back in 19-67. she had to sneak in, because women weren't allowed to compete. she was almost stopped by race officials before she could finish. today she ran alongside a group that's going to be competing in the relays and 5-k. switzer says it's great to see a generation of runners that's been inspired. kathrine switzer, marathoner: "they are touched very much by this story because everybody in life's been told you're not welcome, you're not good enough. and you do it anyway, and you become fearless. and that gives people a lot of courage, so i'm happy for that." jack: switzer will take part in the local 5 pasta dinner tomorrow night. that's from 5 to 8 at the community choice credit union ballroom. jack: to get ready for the big race... there's also some road closures you need to be aware of. starting at 6 tonight-- sections of

local five's jacob peklo joins us now with more. jacob: hundreds of volunteers spent their morning...prepari ng meals for families in need. but now, one former homeless man has made it back on his feet, and is giving to those who have the greatest needs. and he never wants to forget the changes that he's made. terry gable remembers hitting rock bottom. terry gable, intake coordinator: "while sitting in eight days of jail, i decided i'd had enough of that old life, and wanted something new." after battling an addiction to drugs and alcohol, he joined the program at hope ministries, designed to help people get their lives back on track. terry gable, intake coordinator: "after turning my life over, it completely changed. it transformed my whole life for me and my family." now, six years after first volunteering to work here, he's got a full time job. and when he sees more than 200 other people giving their time on this thanksgiving day, he knows firsthand how it can make a big difference. here and ate, myself, when i was running around
