local five's jacob peklo joins us now with more. jacob: hundreds of volunteers spent their morning...prepari ng meals for families in need. but now, one former homeless man has made it back on his feet, and is giving to those who have the greatest needs. and he never wants to forget the changes that he's made. terry gable remembers hitting rock bottom. terry gable, intake coordinator: "while sitting in eight days of jail, i decided i'd had enough of that old life, and wanted something new." after battling an addiction to drugs and alcohol, he joined the program at hope ministries, designed to help people get their lives back on track. terry gable, intake coordinator: "after turning my life over, it completely changed. it transformed my whole life for me and my family." now, six years after first volunteering to work here, he's got a full time job. and when he sees more than 200 other people giving their time on this thanksgiving day, he knows firsthand how it can make a big difference. here and ate, myself, when i was running around

local five's jacob peklo has more from osceola. jon kraft has been staying at southern hills specialty care facility in osceola for about nine months now. but for the past two months, kraft has been feeling very uncomfortable. jon kraft, resident: "i feel like i want to move out of that room and get into a clean room, where i don't do that no more." kraft has psoriasis on his arm, but until recently, he felt the itch he was dealing with something far worse. jon kraft, resident: "one day, i went to take a shower, and man i kraft called local 5 thinking the facility had bed bugs or mites, but staff say he's one of a handful of guests dealing with a skin condition. jason bridie, southern hills spokesman: "we addressed this early on with medical attention and even medical providers weren't sure what we were dealing with initially." they say kraft saw a dermatologist twice to diagnose him--but the exact ailment is still unknown. some thought the skin issue was scabies, a redness that would be treated with antibiotics. dermatologists rec

nikki: local 5's jacob peklo has their story. one week ago, rebecca sonnenburg and her family received a phone call that was their worst nightmare. rebecca sonnenburg, daughter: "my father was the one who was dead on arrival, and my uncle died being transported to the hospital." she says this intersection at hubbell and east 37th street has a number of problems. rebecca sonnenburg, daughter: "speed, no stoplights. there's no crosswalk. it's just a free for all drag race zone." family members say the corner has been problematic for a long time, and they want to see a change before it's too late. tamara cox, niece: "we were turning in here and we almost got rear-ended ourselves." randy sonnenburg, son: "they need something here. when they were doing construction, they had lights. they worked. where are they at now?" on sunday night, exactly one week after the deadly crash, family members gathered near their memorial to hold a vigil. and the hope is that something can be done, to protect others from a similar experience. rebecca son

reporting in des moines, jacob peklo, local 5 news. we are iowa." jack: the prize money was paid out already, and the iowa lottery is working to get the money back through the legal process. lottery officials say they get a case like this about once a year. we tried reaching out to jobie boals- watters, but have not heard back. jack: a wild scene near the drake campus today -- cops say a drunk driver was out of control and ramming into cars. the guy left a fast food restaurant and started weaving through traffic along carpenter and forest avenues, take a look at this. this is the moment when the guy's minivan finally hits a power pole and the whole things comes to an end. but look at some of the cars he hit along the way -- at least eight. police took away the man on a gurney after he crashed his car into a pole. they say the man was giggling as they took him away. witnesses say several people chased the driver down the street after hitting their vehicles. no one was hurt. jack: after two recent devastating cases of vandalism -- investigators in for

in the studio, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa." nikki if you'd like to help out some of the homeless in des moines, care for camps is still seeking more donations for the winter months. they say their biggest need is for socks and soup. nikki: a bad crash in story county takes one life, and four other people are recovering. it happened last night around 7:30 at 170th street and george washington carver in gilbert. police say a car blew through a stop sign and was broadsided by another car. a 92 year old passenger in the car that ran the stop sign was killed. he's identified as kenneth kemmerer. his son was the driver of that vehicle. four people in the other car were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. so far, no charges have been filed. nikki: in madison county, a man was found dead this morning after his jeep flipped. it happened around 5 a-m near the intersection of oakcrest avenue and 290th street in peru, iowa. the jeep wrangler was flipped upside down and the driver, 60-year- old paul shafer of des moine

local five's jacob peklo joins us now from outside roosevelt with more. jacob? jacob: stephanie, it's an amazing statistic. 58 teachers, or about half of educators at roosevelt high school, were out sick today. some called in at the beginning of the day, while others tried to push through but couldn't make it past lunch. it truly created an unusual situation. <<(it's a sight you're not used to seeing so early in the day at a high school... row after row of empty parking spaces for the teachers and faculty. ruquiyah muhammad, senior: "i thought about it, and i was like, heehee, haha, because i thought everyone was joking." but it was no laughing matter. half of the teachers were out sick on thursday, most pointing to food poisoning. phil roeder, district communication manager: "seems like the one common denominator for it, is that all the teachers who got it attended a staff luncheon yesterday." while the food is the primary suspect, district officials decided to play it safe by giving students the final two hours off, ahead of their scheduled three day weekend.

but before any decisions are made, they're asking the public for help local five's jacob peklo joins us now with more on the discussion. jacob? nikki, the district needs to cut nearly eight-hundred thousand dollars from its budget for next year. so, some long-time programs may not be offered next year. but there's a big group of students and parents that are hoping some of those are spared. lilah fidler has been taking japanese classes for two years in west des moines. but because enrollment dipped by 133 students, the district must save about $800-thousand dollars. that means those japanese courses could be eliminated. lilah fidler, sophomore: "i feel like people should have other options, in case they want translation jobs, or anything that would involve economic growth or globalization." dan carolin, japanese teacher: "there's a misperception of japan not being an important business player any more, but japan is an established commodity in the world economy." superintendent linda remy says the cuts aren't as painful as a couple years ago, when they were asked to trim nearly $3 mil

reporting live in des moines, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa. a morning fire has destroyed a local motel.... around 7:30 a-m, firefighters were called to the cozy rest at 23-16 southeast 14th street for a fire in one of the rooms. when they arrived, they say the building was engulfed in flames. firefighters had to temporarily close down the area. there are no reports of any injuries and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, nikki/ots all eyes in college football are now on the big ten championship. the iowa hawkeyes are number four in the country and taking on fifth ranked michigan state. jordan furbee reports from indianapolis as we get closer to kickoff... jordan how is it going? live in the studio, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa. jack: new video tonight is showing us more about a metro murder investigation. saturday, 17- year-old noah laprei was arrested in the brutal murder of his grandmother..... 79-year-old rachel pray. neighbors say laprei went door to door covered in blood, asking to call police for help after beating pray. he then went to a nearby git-n-go gas station. jack: this surveillance video is from inside that git- and-go where police eventually arrested laprei. you see here laprei coming into the store, yelling at the clerk and another male customer. he knocks over displays and causes a scene, but eventually is taken outside by one of the customers. he starts to attack that man but then starts ramming his body into the window outside the store-- over and over. eventually police arrive, and it takes three officers to get him on the ground and handcuffed. laprei could be tried as an adult in the case. on monday, family of noah laprei told local 5 they forgive him and hope he's tried on lesser char

local five's jacob peklo joins us now with more. jacob/bam nikki, the project is called the homeless round up put on by the group "the thankful leper." they work to meet the needs of and work with the homeless on both a group and individual basis. and i met up with a group today who showed me how those efforts are really helping them. ken walter has been homeless for less than a week. ken walter, homeless: "i've been on and off homeless for the last 4 years, because i was raised in the system, about 11 years of it. so, i know how it feels to be outside." erin youngblood has always wanted to help people in need, like walter. nats though she was never actually homeless, she was close. erin youngblood, volunteer: "my husband actually ended up leaving. so, i was abandoned without a job, and so i struggled to find work and pay bills." hundreds of people often come to these giveaways by the thankful leper, and for folks like walter, his family at his sacred heart campsite is helping him stay strong during his trying time. kenny walter, ho
