wednesday, james chase's class at john o'connell. and one of the students actually asked what it means to go to city because she heard once you go to city, you get stuck and you don't leave. and she was told that by a counselor. and we can have the best videos, we can have the best fliers, but if there's this misinformation maybe -- and i don't know how to classify it, maybe, but counselors, that city is not the place for people to go, then that is a problem we need to figure out how to address. maybe it was part of the accreditation process. maybe it was especially students of color getting stuck in remedial math and english, which we have addressed by ab 705, which immediately places all students in college-level math and english courses. i know we're doing a breakfast again and bringing counselors back on campus, so i think that is a great way to do that. consistently i hear over and over again, the consensus among some counselors is city college is damaging. i don't know how to figure that out, commissioner, but i think there's something that we need to -- we need to do. >> i

[applause] >> good evening, families and staff of san francisco unified. i am susan ryan, the very proud principal of john o'connell high. o'connell's different because we're a small school designed to make sure that individual school students at our school fluorish, and i can think of no more important person than samantha aguirre. she makes sure they're successful at o'connell, making sure they have strong literacy and presentation skills. she is an m.v.p. for student leadership, running the student leadership at our school. she's an m.v.p. when it comes to athletics, coaching track and cross-country. she runs social media at o'connell. she's an incredible person, and she's been with us four years. i can't imagine our school without her, and in a special distinction, she is nominated by a parent. i'm sorry, i don't have the words in front of me, but essentially, she is relentless in making sure that every student is successful and making

] >> with that, i will mention a few items. this past thursday, students in the john o'connell high school helped -- health and behavioral science pathway demonstrated their e.m.s. skills, like fast stroke recognition, heart attack recognition, c.p.r., including heimlich manoeuvre, c-spine application and bleeding control to local emergency services experts including volunteers with the san francisco fire department. the health and behavioral science pathway helps students prepare for a wide range of health-related career paths in san francisco. tomorrow's -- tomorrow, 67 student musicians from the high school will rehearse as they prepare to march in the national fourth of july parade in washington this summer. the band was invited by nancy pelosi to represent sfusd, san francisco, in the state of california at the annual celebration in the nation's capital. this will be the first -- thank you. dexter james. the lead cafeteria worker at john o'connell high school. this is presented by jennifer. >> good evening. it is my great pleasure to recognize dexter james, the lead dining staff employee at john o'connell high school for his rave award. dexter has been working for the district for over 30 years. [applause] yeah, let's give a big round of applause for that. dexter is an amazing individual who cares deeply for his students. i want to emphasize his students. they believe they are his students to take care of every day. he has a welcoming smile and always engages with the students. students know when asks, how are you doing today? that he really wants to hear from them about what their day is like. he creates meaningful relationships with the students and with the staff. he takes the time during the busy meal service to greet each student. he lets them know what he is serving and by eating healthy meals, they'll be ready for class. at breakfast he asks to see them at lunch. he wants to always create a welcoming environment for them. the coworker who nominated dexter said it

of the african-american parent advisory councils, one at john o'connell, the students spoke about their experience and they wanted to highlight the experience for african-american males and what type of appropriate staffing was provided to support those students. we heard same school, kind of overlapping, it's the student voice. we're giving a lot of services for our african-american students, a lot of resources coming in, but it's not necessarily what the kids have asked for. so the children were saying, hear our voices, tell our stories and allow us to be on the decision-making team. >> and then i guess i had another question. i'm seeing connections with a lot of conversations we've been having on the board. there has been a lot of conversation around wellness. it seems there is a lot of communities talking about it, we've been talking about it on the board. and i'm also connecting that with budget and questions i've been asking around social workers and was surprised to see, some schools have part-time, some schools have full-time. i'm wondering about staffing in relationship t

at john o'connell high school in the mission to tell us about which young people at o'connell stand out to them. this is when we learned about the incredible leadership of najari turner. najari's involved in an impressive number of activities, both in school and beyond. she has a number of leadership roles within the student body and is constantly working to improve the school community. she is the sports chair of the associated student body leadership team, she is an amazing emcee at nearly all of o'connell's school assemblies and rallies, and she plays on the basketball team. in addition, najari is a proud member of both the latinx club and black student union and also the president of the yearbook team. outside of school, she somehow finds time to work at the exploratorium, where she's not only learned to do seven magic tricks, but how to dissect a cow's eye. i can't wait to hear about that from you, more about that. throughout all these activities, najari displays an open-hearted commitment to bringing together students at o'connell to celebrate their cultures and diversity. she

with john o'connell on the high school e.m.s. day, which was a success, and a picture of some of the command staff and a member, danny grazia attending a barbecue at station 49. it's very great that we're spending sometime with the members at 49. the interaction has been working really well. like i said, the coffee. we had -- starbucks sponsored a coffee with a paramedic, one day with each of the providers. so king american had one day, a.m.s., and r.f.f.e. it was well received. here, we have members of the public committee, loss prevention team, who staffed a safety booth at this year's carnivale at the mission. we'll talk a little bit more about that later. our community outreach continues. this is engine 23 with many of the p.i.o. community outreach events. this was a safety event. whoops, use that slide. district safety fair in the mission. this was a success, and with many community members, we're learning life safety and disaster preparedness with the tools. we've seen this picture before, but in light of some of the events this week, we're -- i want to reassure that we have an
