so, i want to get right to abc's chief white house correspondent jonathan karl, who will be part of the team one week from tonight. and jon, when the white house sees these numbers, what do they make of them? >> reporter: well, david, the white house is brushing off this and a whole lot of other bad news in the polls for democrats, but what is most disturbing in these numbers for the white house and for the democratic party is, not only do people say that they distrust government, they don't think it's working, but they blame democrats and the white house for the dysfunction. look at this number. we asked, which party do you trust more? 42% said republicans. 37% say democrats. that is a big switch from just six months ago, when more said they trusted democrats. >> and jon, the entire political team, we all got together today and we were talking, what, six senate seats the republicans need to pick up to take control of the senate? >> reporter: yeah, and here's the thing. there are at least a dozen seats that are in play. so, republicans have a chance not only to win, but to win big. but
