he was serving a life sentence for the 2013 shooting death of odin lloyd. jean casares is here and has been following the case from the very, very beginning. jean, what more are we learning. >> we are getting a statement in from jose baez who was one of the defense attorneys on the case that he was just acquitted of double murder of last friday and the statement is saying that the family has hired jose bahhes to look at the circumstances surrounding his death and the statement goes on to say that the family and legal team is shocked by the death of aaron hernandez. there was no conversation or correspondence from aaron or his family and they spoke to him in the last few days that would have indicated anything like this was possible. aaron was looking forward to an opportunity for a second chance for his innocence and that, of course, is in the conviction and the murder of odin lloyd. we request that a thorough investigation can be done, but it was at 3:05 this morning when prison officials found aaron hernandez unresponsive in the cell according to what we

this all stems from even before he was convicted in the murder of odon lloyd. it was july 2012 when he was at a nightclub, having a good time. somebody had drinks, they spilled the drinks on him. he got upset. what prosecutors said was that he then went outside and started firing at a car that had who he believed the people that spilled the drinks on him. well, two victims did perish at that time. and a good friend of aaron hernandez's was with him and that person became the star witness for the prosecution. but then we have another wrinkle, brooke, because months after that circumstance and that shooting happened, this good friend named bradley of aaron hernandez was in florida, so was aaron hernandez, and bradley got shot between the eyes allegedly by aaron hernandez but he survived and that allowed him to become the star witness in the prosecution's case to describe exactly what happened that night at the nightclub, shooting at the car, five bullets. the thing is, jose baez, the defense attorney, turned around on cross-examination and decimated that witness

i know aaron hernandez did some heinous things in killing odin lloyd. and he was involved in the other double murder. he did some terrible things, but like i said, a guy who had his whole life in front of him, a $40 million contract, superstar athletic career, most tragedically a daughter who is four years old. he was seven months old when aaron was hauled away. she's going to grow up without a father. his peon say who sat by him day after day in court, month after month, all the families involved, the two victims in the double murder who haven't gotten closure. there won't be a conviction in the murder of their two sons. they were dragged through this lengthy court process and now they wake up to find out he kills himself right afterwards. so just sadness on so many levels and it affected so in different people. >> thank you very much, ben and patrick for joining us. again, hernandez's victim in that 2013 murder is odin lloyd. he would have been 31 years old. this morning president trump is taking credit for a republican victory even though the gop did

hernandez was found guilty of shooting lloyd seven times in an industrial park less than a mile from his massachusetts home. a key piece of evidence, this surveillance video shows hernandez holding what appears to be a gun, prosecutors say it was the same night lloyd was killed. news of the disgraced football player's alleged suicide rocked his friends, family and legal team. >> it's very hard for me to accept the fact that he may have committed suicide. we are keeping an open mind. >> reporter: in addition to winning an acquittal for the double murder last week, attorney jose baez was appealing the guilty verdict. a spokesman said that it remains under investigation but there's nothing to indicate this was anything but an apparent suicide. as hernandez was led out of court and back to his solitary prison cell, one of his last actions was to blow a kiss to his fiance and his 3-year-old daughter. >> what do they expect to find in the investigation into what happened? >> whenever there's an unintended death, they're going to do toxicology tests to see whether he had drugs in his system
