abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez was one of the first to tweet about what happened near geary and polk street. >> reporter: shortly after 11:00 this morning geary and polk street was flooded with emergency vehicles. patients were triaged. a total of 16 people were suffering from the effects of a gas leak near the next door homeless shelter at 10001 polk street. >> i didn't have time to get any clothes on. as you can see i'm in a robe. this is so embarrassing. >> everything was feeling nauseated, shortness of breath. >> reporter: how are you now? >> i'm fine. >> reporter: 14 of the 16 had to be taken to local hospitals. all of them were either workers or clients of the shelter. it didn't take long to determine the culprit. construction workers in the alley next to the shelter. jay flores construction company was working on a sewer project at the time. >> upon arrival we discovered a construction company had punctured a 2-inch gas main on the street. heavy smell of gas in the street. >> reporter: pg&e managed to clamp the line in less than an hour. police an firefighters kept this a

i'm live in antioch, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. >>> thank you. there were issues with illegal fireworks all over the bay area. in san jose, officials are continuing the crackdown through the weekend. they're keeping up their illegal fireworks reporting website through july 8th. they're encouraging people to use the online tool. the reason for the extension. because the holiday was on a wednesday. >> we as a city do anticipate, because the fourth of july fell in the middle of the week, that fireworks related behaviors will continue through this upcoming weekend and that's why the tool is being kept turned on. >> this is the third year the online tool has been available. but the first time people have been able to upload video and photos to the website. >>> a bay area golf coach has been arrested, accused of molesting his students. he is facing eight counts of sexual assault, all the victims are girls. kim was based out of a former county drive golf center. but also taught at various other golf facilities in the bay area. the alameda county sheriff

lyanne melendez has more on the one factor that all of these crashes had in common. >> reporter: the first accident happened at 7:15 this morning. a 10th grader at antioch high school was dropped off by a parent when she was hit in the cross walk. the driver did not stop and ran off. >> the individual driver sped off. but there were witnesses, including the parent of the young lady that was the victim. >> reporter: police were able to identify the car and are now looking for driver. less than an hour later, two cousins were hit in the same cross walk. this time the driver stopped to help. police say the driver was blinded by the sun. >> they were not able to see as clearly. that's why this incident happened. >> reporter: all three students were taken to the hospital and released. e-mails were sent out to parents asking them to talk to their children about the proper safety measures to take when crossing the street. the school added staff at the cross walks today. >> as a parent telling your child to make sure that you look both ways, that you get the attention of the driver before yo
